A recent study indicates that patients who come off new slimming jabs like semaglutide or tirzepatide tend to recover reduced body mass far faster than those who stop traditional lifestyle plans.
Findings released in a leading medical journal demonstrates that while obese individuals frequently drop about a fifth of their body weight while using the jabs, the weight is regained at an estimated rate of nearly a kilo each month once they quit.
"People buying such medications must be aware of the risk of quick weight regain when the medication concludes," stated expert Dr. Susan Jebb.
That rate of recovery implies a reversion to pre-treatment mass in about one and a half years.
Analyzing Treatments
The study, which looked at 37 of trials involving thousands of patients, compared the results of GLP-1 agonists with conventional dieting.
Scientists emphasize that people who shed pounds through lifestyle changes alone typically experience a more gradual creep back—around 100 grams monthly—once they finish.
The Reason for the Quick Regain
Experts suggest the mode of action of the drugs accounts for the accelerated rebound.
The injections imitate a natural hormone called glucagon-like peptide-1, which moderates feelings of fullness.
"Artificially providing the hormone concentrations several times higher than the body's typical production could lead to the system to generate a reduced amount of its endogenous GLP-1, and may also lessen sensitivity to its actions," said Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition specialist.
"Discontinuation of this medication leads to hunger is uncontrolled, making binge eating much more probable."
A Lifelong Condition?
The NHS advise the jabs for individuals with obesity-related medical conditions, alongside prescribed lifestyle changes.
A number of clinicians argue that, given the likelihood of relapse, the therapy should be considered long-term.
This perspective is supported by pharmaceutical companies, who note that the results "highlight the persistent nature of obesity," akin to managing diseases like high blood pressure.
User Testimonies
Individuals who have come off the medication explain a intense resurgence of hunger.
"I experienced a switch that goes on and I was suddenly starving," recalled one woman.
This difficulty is exacerbated if users have not established lasting dietary or behavioural changes during treatment.
Growing Interest
Recent estimates show that millions of adults in the UK have tried weight-loss jabs in the last 12 months, with interest remaining high.
- Adoption is higher among females compared to males.
- The 40s and 50s demographic shows the highest level of interest.
- A large proportion obtain the drugs through private prescriptions rather than public health services.
Finally, researchers caution that while these medications are powerful agents for shedding pounds, they are not a magic fix and lasting health benefits likely depends on integrated behavioural support.
