Much like the recent storm hit the northern region the prior day, City overwhelmed Manchester United away at the Etihad Stadium. It was a statement three goal win for the City coach's side owing to goals from Knaak, Bunny Shaw and Lauren Hemp. It was a result that firmly established their leadership claims as they consolidated their standing at the top of the table.

Back-to-Back Setbacks for Manchester United

This outcome signalled consecutive Women's Super League losses for Marc Skinner’s side for the first time since spring 2024, leaving them seven points off the table toppers with their championship aspirations in serious doubt.

Manchester United's capacity to balance league and continental soccer with a limited roster has been a widely debated subject since they secured entry to the Champions League. Looking at the schedule, it always appeared this was the matchday that would fully examine this capability. Regrettably for the visitors, they looked fatigued all game, the historic win against Paris Saint-Germain clearly having had an impact.

Team Changes

Marc Skinner had attempted to make changes with a handful of adjustments. Ella Toone, Terland, Dominique Janssen and Galton all brought freshness, although the omission of the high-performing Malard to the sidelines raised a few eyebrows.

Manchester City, in comparison, have fewer fitness concerns. Jeglertz made a single alteration from their most recent win over the Toffees with Hemp making her initial starting appearance since returning from a fitness issue.

Dominant First Half

The storm clouds started to accumulate for the United boss and his side from the kickoff. This was a demonstration of the quality from City whose energetic offense manipulated and tore United open with a superb opening period performance that saw them put three past the keeper in under half an hour.

This put the hosts in a commanding position and left United all at sea. Before this match, United had allowed just a handful in this WSL season but they disintegrated in the presence of Manchester City's creative prowess.

Initial Opportunities

The omens came quickly when Miedema used her strength to bundle Zigiotti off the ball, only to send her shot wide. Lauren Hemp was at the heart of everything early on, using the space left by Jayde Riviere down the visitors' right flank. Her crosses were creating danger and led to an chance for Yui Hasegawa that Anna Sandberg cleared off the line.

United had several sorties forward, their direct style giving them options in the wings but they could not challenge Ayaka Yamashita. Manchester City, in the meantime, commanded the ball, taunting their opposition and trying to draw them out of their organization.

Goals Galore

A short time later, they had a third after a swift turnover in the ball saw Hemp given the space to drive a shot home from outside the box.

Second Half

The most obvious substitution came from Skinner at the half-time as Malard entered for Terland but by this time it was too late to change the course of the game. Former Manchester City player Park came most likely to score, striking the post, but the visitors were lacking in ideas and failed to register a single shot on goal.

The home side, on the other hand, could have added to their advantage when a superb Vivianne Miedema pass sent Shaw away only for her to fluff her lines but it mattered little to the winning team. Previously unable to beat any side who ended above them the previous campaign, Jeglertz’s side now have successes against the Gunners and Manchester United to position them in a commanding standing after nine games.
