Viral video clips appeared to show Jones flashing his middle finger toward opposing supporters, but Jones maintains he was actually giving a thumbs-up to Cowboys fans present at the game as his team clinched a decisive win.
“That was regrettable. That was kind of an interaction with our fans seated near me,” Jones explained during a radio appearance. “Present was a large group of Dallas supporters—not Jets fans, Cowboys fans. The entire stadium was filled with excitement for the Dallas team.”
He further clarified that the signal was entirely accidental, happening amid the excitement following the team’s last score. “I simply showed the incorrect digit,” he noted. “It was accidentally performed. This is sincere. If you want to call it unplanned, you can. But it got corrected pretty quick.”
League Context for Owner Penalties
This incident isn’t the initial instance an league proprietor has been penalized for misconduct. Recent examples involve:
- Panthers owner David Tepper was penalized $300K for throwing a drink at spectators in early 2024.
